Alstonville is one of the older towns in the Northern Rivers. By 1883 it already had pubs, stores and mills, and a lot of the housing that came after was built well before asbestos products were banned in Australia at the end of 2003. Federation-era homes near the town centre, timber cottages on the leafy backstreets, and the brick-and-fibro builds from the 1950s through the 1980s all sit in the window where asbestos was common.
